Shoulder Pain & Chiropractic Care in Macomb
A guide to understanding shoulder pain, common causes and symptoms, and the role chiropractic care plays in addressing the underlying patterns. From Dr. Chris McNeil and Macomb Township Chiropractic.
A common condition that can affect even the simplest daily tasks
Shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints adults experience, and it can be a debilitating condition that interferes with everything from working and driving to sleeping and relaxing. Many people in Macomb County experience shoulder pain at some point, often connected to the demands of daily life — desk work, long drives across Metro Detroit, repetitive movements at automotive plants, sports, and the natural wear of years of activity.
Shoulder pain typically originates from a combination of factors: poor posture, muscle strain, repetitive motions, herniated discs, spinal misalignments, or pinched nerves. Heavy lifting or sudden movements can aggravate discs in the spine and the muscles surrounding the shoulder. Excessive sitting and slouching can put the spine in an unnatural position, contributing to pinched nerves that radiate into the upper back, shoulders, and arms.
This guide is intended as an educational resource for people in Macomb County who want to understand shoulder pain and learn about chiropractic care as part of the conversation. For specific concerns, the right starting point is always a conversation with a qualified healthcare provider — and at Macomb Township Chiropractic, that conversation is welcomed.

— Macomb Township ChiropracticWhat commonly causes shoulder pain
Shoulder pain rarely has a single cause — most often it’s the result of several factors compounding over time. The following are the most frequently discussed contributors in chiropractic conversations.
Poor Posture
Forward head posture from screens, desk work, and long drives is one of the most commonly discussed contributors to shoulder pain in modern wellness conversations.
Muscle Strain
Strained muscles from improper lifting, overuse, or sudden movements can cause acute shoulder pain that lingers without proper attention.
Repetitive Motions
Repetitive movements — common in automotive plant work, manual labor, and many office settings — can lead to gradual shoulder pain over time.
Herniated Discs
Bulging or herniated discs in the cervical spine can put pressure on nerves that travel to the shoulder and arm, contributing to pain and discomfort.
Spinal Misalignments
Misalignments in the cervical and thoracic spine can put pressure on the nerves coming out of the neck to the shoulders and back, contributing to pain.
Falls & Trauma
Slip and falls, sports injuries, auto accidents, and other trauma are among the most discussed causes of upper back and shoulder pain.
How shoulder pain commonly presents
Shoulder pain shows up in a wide variety of ways, and people often describe more than one symptom at a time. The following are commonly reported patterns.
For any specific symptoms, consulting a qualified healthcare provider is always the right starting point. This list is informational, not diagnostic.
How chiropractic care addresses shoulder pain
Chiropractic care addresses shoulder pain through a structured approach focused on the spine, posture, and the nerves that connect the upper back to the shoulders and arms. The following four areas are central to how Dr. McNeil and Macomb Township Chiropractic approach the conversation.
Spinal Adjustments
Chiropractic adjustments help relieve nerve pressure and improve muscle and joint mobility. Correcting alignment in the cervical and thoracic spine reduces pressure on the nerves that lead to the shoulders.
Postural Rehabilitation
Postural rehabilitation focuses on correcting the shape of the spine — the underlying structural pattern often connected to shoulder pain. This is the foundation of the Chiropractic Biophysics technique.
Disc Decompression
For people with bulging or herniated discs in the neck, gentle disc decompression on a state-of-the-art table can help relieve pressure on discs and the nerves that travel to the shoulders.
Education & Lifestyle
Education on posture, ergonomics, sleep position, and movement habits is a core part of the chiropractic approach. Patients receive specific recommendations they can apply to daily life.
